BEST running shoes outhere are called Saucony's
http://www.saucony.com/
They are incredibly light weight and have excellent technology to be an amazing running shoe. I just bought my first pair not too long ago...
try jogging, and pick a short route at first...run outside...tread mills have nothing on the great out doors
At the lake in my city, there are markers on the pavement to let you know how far you've run, so see if there is anywhere like that where you live.
I'm running my first marathon this summer, gotta love it!
Good luck!

Go to Lukeslocker.com These guys measure shoe width and have special order designs from Asics and others that help people that naturally pronate or supinate. The will put on a treadmill and watch your stride to determine what is right for you. Now Im not a big guy like you but at 6' 210 Im not light on my feet either and this made all the difference in the world. I cant tell you how much this did for me. Im a really wide foot and now I wont even thin about buying a regular shoe from footlocker or something.
As far as running programs go I like the body for life method of running at high intensity for 60 and walking for 30-60 and repeat. The theory goes that if you stay at a consistent pace your body adapts to quickly and plateaus which the varying intensity of the above program avoids.
Good luck bro,

Good luck bro,
Good recommendation. I had a mold taken of my foot and then had inserts made for my gym shoes. I have knee problems too and this helped me out quite a bit. My Ortho Sx told me to change out inserts every 3-4 months to avoid injuring my knees any more.

Asics rock! Best running shoes out there IMO.

Treadmill for sure as it does not put as much force on the joints. I started a few weeks back doing the walk run program like stated above and really like it. I perform mine at a 2 min walk warm up, then a 2 min jog, 1 min walk, then a 1 min full out spring followed by a 1 to 2 min walk and repeat the sprint walk cycle as many times as I feel comfortable. Good luck

with your size bro. you might look at a brooks beast. it is a running shoe made for bigger guys also new balance makes a good shoe for big guys. With the weight you have you will go through other running shoes very fast. I would look at the new balance in a 1100 series and up. they are worth the money. I used to sale shoes and I had to learn how they were made. I am also over 275 lbs. I hope this helps.
also with the shins splits they make a support sock that will treat the problem. I am unaware of there being a cure for them right now.

Nikes are the WORST shoes for running....I completely agree...I have a couple pairs of those also, I like the shocks, but I don't like how they fit at the heel, they tend to dig in there, and they aren't a very light shoe...

i love the nike shocks very comfortable and light weight to me. never had a problem w/them. as far as running. i'd do some type of HIT like mentioned above.
