This is what you should be using if you want to pay more for a real protein for an athlete:
BY Thinkbig

wheys:

isolate: this should be and i mean only, in the form of cfm micro/ultra filtered from glanbia. Ion exchange is not one in the same and not interchangeable here.

hydrolysate: this should be in a very low molecular weight form and soemthing around 520 or so is ok, if you can its best to find hydrolyzed whey isolate because its the isolate thats been taken a step further and pre-digested for you making peptides which are short chain clusters oif amino's that have some very beneficial effects that i could write a huge page on and i am not goingot do here.

casein.

micellar casein: this is the best casein (slow protein) you will find, its processed in such fashion as to allow the protein to contain micelles which form a bolus in your stomach and disburse amino's for around 7 hours give or take, plus its contains all the native fractions that you want, in a non denatured form.

hydrolyzed casein: this may be confusing for some of you, because what they have done here is taken a protein that is by and large slow (casein) and they have pre-digested a portion of it, this means that its both a slow and fast protein now because the part thats been hydrolyzed is now fast acting peptides, but the non hydrolyzed protion is still intact whole casein (i.e. Slow protein).

pepto pro: this is the same thing as the above mentioned hydrolyzed casein protein excepot currently as of today it has the highest amnount of hydrolyzation of any protein maaking the molecular weight very very low, and helping to make the protein even faster absorbed and less bitter.

Again, the same thing applies here in that the protein that is hydrolzed in the pepto pro, will br fats acting, but the other portion is still just whole casein and is slow digested.

Pepto pro claims its very small molecular weight of mostly di and tri peptides of around 360 daltons offers a plethora of benefits, there is a lot of research that backs it, currently for pre-post-intr workout times this is considered to be the king of proteins at this time.

With hydrolyzed whey isolate coming in a close second for those 3 times.

During other times of the day, when your substituting a shake for a meal or when your supplementing a meal with protein powder, its probably best to use a protein isolate with either some fat, fiber, or some micellar casein in it, this slows absorption and allows the protein to be utilized as otherwise it will be shuttled to the liver and alot will be turned into glucose.

Now, again to recap when your pre/intra/post training you want very high amounts of blood amino acids and insulin, because the body will use it, but when your not training for several hours or have trained several hours ago, fast proteins alone will mostly be deaminated in the liver.

In closing you would want to use the above fast proteins pre-intra-post workout and then at other times of the day use either a combo of fast and slow or just slow, you can aslo take a fast protein like cfm whey isolate and add fiber abnd efa's to slow absorptiuon and digestion rates, this effectively turns it intoa slower acting protein.

This si optimal according to the latest rsearch at this time, things change as science finds out more and more.
