Well I went to the doctors a few days ago and I am finally going to get myself all fixed up. To start I have had shoulder issues for the past 15 years. It started as a slight pain from doing heavy military presses and then progressed to a little click here and there. Well I used to just take some time off off training and then after a month or so I would go back and everything would be fine for awhile and then it would start up again so I would take time off again or just do real light shoulder workouts. Then a few years ago it started to hurt real bad so I said the hell with it I will take awhile off and just let it heal cause I didnt think I was taking enough time off all the times before, so I took a full year off. Now 3 years later it is back and killing me all the time. Both my shoulders are in pain, I have popping and clicking and tightness when I lift and when I am not lifting it hurts to raise my arms up and when I wake up in the morning is the worst, I cant move them at all and they just hurt so bad. So I went to the doctor and I told him what was going on and how long it has been going on and he took xrays and said that the gap that is supposed to be present in my left shoulder is almost non existant and my right shoulder was better but still needs attention, so I have an MRI for both shoulders scheduled for next week. I will just go from there with whatever needs to be done to fix me up.
On to the next problem, my elbow. I dont know how it happened but my left elbow is messed up. It started happening a few weeks ago while I was benching. I noticed it was feeling weak when doing my warm ups, then when I put the weight on for my first set I had hardly any strength in my left arm at all. It felt as if my arm was just going to give out and drop it was so weak. It would stay like that for the few 2 or 3 reps and then it would get better and I could pump out more reps, like it had to get used to the weight or something. Then the very next set the same thing would happen. I went and bought a neoprene arm sleeve and that seemed to help alittle with the lifting but it still felt weak. Now I dont know what happened to make it like that and I told the doctor that it could be a coincidence that when I was throwing someone out of the bar the weekend before it started hurting that I may have bumped it on something, even though I dont remember, cause the next day it was all black and blue around my elbow and up and down the back of my arm and there was like a knot there. I also told him that when I did my very first toughman contest back in 1999 that after my fight on friday my elbow was sore and when I woke up on saturday to get ready for my fight that night that my whole arm was black and blue, from just above my wrist to my armpit all the way around my arm was like solid purple. I though it was just because I had never fought before and my elbow wasnt used to the constant jamming from punches being thrown and landed. I got an xray and he said it looked good and it may be the tendons, so he gave me some medicine that is supposed to help it get better. He said if it dont work to let him know and he will check to see if maybe I tore a tendon in my elbow.
Now the next problem, my hernia. I have had a hernia for about 8 years, just above my belly button. It started as a little lump and it has gotten alittle bigger but not really noticeable unless I lay down and then you can see the lump in my stomach. The doctor checked it out and he said it is a ventral hernia and not umbilical. It is where the ab muscles meet in the middle. The tissues where they come together are poking out of a tear between the muscles. I will have to have surgury to fix it. I have a consultation appointment at the end of the month and I will set up an appointment to have it taken care of asap.
I have put all this off long enough and now I just want to get everything fixed so I dont have any more of these problems. So I am out of the gym until I am back to normal, its the best way to go right now.

bro i feel your pain... i truly hope you can get some meaningful recovery with the proper medical attention... i know how stubborn these injuries can be... shit the hernia, my ma's had dramas with that i know how painfull that can be... i'll share my "broken" story:
my shoulders are fucked also... apparantly they are "lax" so they pop out real easy sometimes... but when they do my shoulders are fawked for at least a week or two and i cant do shit... about 10 days ago i completely dislocated my left shoulder throwing this girl around in a swimming pool, one of my mates is a doctor who was there popped it back in for me... started a course maybe a month or so ago... everything was going AWESEOME... had to stop my course and start PCT immediately... couldnt barely move my arm without crying only now after 10 days of like 2000mg ibuprofen ED have i got range of motion almost back... cant train upper body at all, have just been doing legs every two days... tried bench this morning... forget it... hurts like a motherfucker... even bicep curls hurt.... so looks like at least another week of legs only... this shoulder thing has been a merry go round for me for the past four years or so... i know how you feel brother

Well I went for my MRI`s on Tuesday and they couldnt do them. They told me it is policy that if I have ever worked in an environment where they did grinding or anything of that sort with metal or if I have ever had any metal removed from my eyes that I first have to go for orbital x-rays to make sure that there is no flecks of metal still in my eyes because the magnet could cause metal to get hot and burn my eyes or it could cause metal to vibrate or move around and cause damage to my eyes. I havent had any metal removed from my eyes in many many years but I totally understand their concern and protection of me and I have no problem following their procedure with getting my eyes x-rayed before the MRI`s, in fact I wouldnt have it any other way. I want to be as safe as I can. The only hassel that was produced from not getting them is that I have to take another day off work and the boss wasnt too happy about that. I gave him the note saying that I was there and the reason why they couldnt do the MRI`s and that I had to reschedule so he knows I am not making stuff up to get out of work. So now I have an appointment for next week to go in the morning to get the orbital x-rays done and then that same night to get the MRI`s done. I was lucky enough to get appointments for both the x-rays and the MRI`s to be done on the same day because after the x-rays are taken I cnat do anything or go anywhere including work until the MRI`s are done because something could change in the time from the x-rays to the MRI`s with my eyes, like something could get in my eyes in between that time and the x-rays wouldnt be correct and I wouldnt know it and it could be bad. So this is where I stand at right now. I have an appointment next week for x-rays and MRI`s, I hope everything is good and everything goes well so I can move to the next step with my shoulders, whatever that may be.

Today(4-22-09) I went to the doctors office and had my eyes x-rayed to make sure there was no metal or anything like that in my eyes when I went and got the MRI`s. The first x-ray they took was a front on view and they thought they may have seen something in one of my eyes, so they took a side view shot and it turned up nothing. I asked what the problem was and they showed me the x-ray and they showed me what they thought may have been a speck of metal which upon viewing the second x-ray it turned out to be a flaw in the x-ray film or as they call it an artifact. The x-ray did not show anything else in my head, just a skull with nothing in it; exactly what I thought it would show, lol. I went home and ate and stuff for a few hours until my appointment to get the MRI`s. I get to the hospital and fill out the same paperwork I filled out last week, they didnt keep any of the stuff I filled out last week so I had to do it again. Then right on time they come and get me and take me for my journey to the MRI trailer. I get there and instead of the two guys that were there before there were two good looking girls doing the MRI today, lucky me! They must have known I was coming and gave me the girls for my time in there. They put me on the table get me all comfortable and stick ear plugs in my ears and procede to put me in the little tube. When I say little I mean it was tiny, it was so small I barely fit in there. I could lick the top of it that is how close it was to my face. I had to put one arm on top of my body to go through the opening. I found out I am clausterphobic!!! I started to freak out when they pushed me all the way in. I was breathing heavy and starting to panic cause I couldnt move at all. I told them it wasnt gonna work and to take me out. They told me there are other locations that have open chambers where you can see out cause there are no sides in parts of it so it isnt totally enclosed. I asked them if there was any way that I could do it cause I dont want to have to make a third appointment and miss more work and rearrange schedules and all that. So they told me they have this method that calms people down and makes them forget about how small it is in there. They put a cloth over my eyes so I couldnt see anything even if I opened my eyes up. It actually worked real good. I was really relaxed because I couldnt tell how far it was from my face to the top of the machine. It is all about depth perception, and it works great. It took about a half hour per shoulder and the girl was telling me how long each scan was going to take befroe she turned it on. That was comforting too. So now I wait a week or so for the radiologist to read them pics and get with my doctor. Step one down toward getting all fixed up. I have my hernia surgury next week. They are going to cut me open and stuff my guts back in and sew up the hole then sew me up and I will be good there. I am happy stuff is finally getting done. I will post up when I get my results of the MRI`s and after my surgury next week.

I feel you on the hernia surgery bro, I had bi-lateral hernia's about 4 inches below my belly button and like yours, at first they were manageable. But one day when I was doing squats it actually ached and I could see that they were sticking out more than before. I finally went in and had the doc fix them up; ask if they are going to put the surgical mesh in during your repair as well. They stitched my tear up and sewed that mesh in there to strengthen the entire region so that it can't happen again. Your body actually just grows into it and it's kind of like the re-bars they put in the concrete slabs. haha One thing I will say bro, is don't watch any funny movies or anything when you are recovering because laughter is down right agonizing.

The doctor told me that if the tear is less than and inch he will just sew it up and if its more than an inch he will put the mesh in there. The thing that I worry about is will it mess it up again doing squats and leg presses and things like that. Alot of exercises involve the stomach muscles one way or another. Another thing is the length of time to recover, I dont like to be out of the gym for any extended period of time.

Well I had the surgury for my hernia, actually hernias, on Friday. OMG does it hurt now! I went in about a half hour early with my wife because they said that I have to have someone there to drive me home when I was done, which I totally understand cause I can barely walk. Well I have never had any kind of surgury before so I didnt know exactly what to expect. I go in and fill out the paperwork which really wasnt much at all, like two sheets and I had to read about how they were going to knock me out, which will only happen during this kind of thing cause I dont get knocked out any other way lol. So they take me back and I get all stripped down to nothing and put the little gown thing on, and when I say little I mean little because they arent made for bigger guys and it didnt really fit to well in any area. Then the nurse comes in and hooks up my IV and puts all these electrode things on my chest and hooks all these wires and stuff up and the little thingy on my finger tip for my pulse. She goes over a few things then the lady who does the knocking me out comes in, I wont even attempt to spell her title besides you all know what I am talking about anyway. She goes over what is going to happen basically, they are going to put me to sleep and I wont feel a thing. Then the nurse starts loading my IV up with all these different things that do all this stuff that is necessary for the operation to work well.. The I asked that before she sedate me if I could talk to the doc and ask him something. He comes in a few mins later and I asked him if he could put the screen in to kind of reinforce the area even if it was smaller than an inch big. He told me he could but he was going to do what was the safest for me and still do the job right. I agreed that safety is the best thing. He said that with the mesh it does reinforce the area with less than a 1% reoccurance of the injury happening there again, but it also has more potential to get infected. So now the nurse comes in and gives me the first inject to sedate me. My wife was there the whole time I was getting all this done talking to me and keeping me company. A little while later the nurse came back in and hit my IV with another shot of the sedating stuff, then they wheeled me away to what I guess was the operating room. I dont know for sure because I was getting real drowsy. They put me on a table and started to tie me up like I was getting a lethal injection or something. They had my arms out on these boards and were like chaining me up, I think. I dont know too much cause I was going out fast. I remember they put the oxygen mask on me but it wasnt like tied on or anything so I dont think they had anything going through it yet. I dont remember anything aftet that except waking up with my wife next to me. I was all bandaged up and they said it went good. They also said that I had 2 hernias, one right above the other and each was a little bigger than a quarter. They put a big piece of mesh in to cover both of them. They said they couldnt believe that I had them so long, 8-9 years, and never had them fixed. They said that it could have strangled my bowels and it could have been real bad if that happened. I told them I still lifted as heavy as I could cause it, or they, really didnt bother me too much. I do 1500lb leg presses with no trouble. The surgury took a total of 4 hours from when I walked in till when I got wheeled out, that wasnt too bad I guess. Now it is sore as can be. I have about an inch and a half cut above my belly button with stitches and all. I can barely walk or move or get up or sit down or lay down or breath or basically do anything at all. Whe I do get up and walk I am all hunched over like a 90 year old man and I move real slow. My wife had to work the next afternoon and I had to have my brother come over to help me with my daughter for 10 hours because I just couldnt do it by myself. I am in so much pain I cant chase her everywhere or have her jumping on me and playing and stuff. I cant even get down to change her diaper. I feel so bad but I have to do what I have to do until I get healed up. I hope it dont take too long. They gave me some meds but they arent real strong and they didnt give me very many of them either, so I hope the pain stops soon before they are all gone because they help take the cramping pain that I get right above and below my belly button. I noticed I am bruising real bad under the incision area, like I got hit in the stomach with a bat or something. It hurts like hell!!!!! I know I probably sound like a big baby but I never had any kind of surgury before and really didnt know that this kind of surgury was going to hurt this bad.
My wife and I had a name for the hernia also, we called it Herman. Then we found out it was twins so we called them Herman and Hermette. I know we are weird! But they are gone now and I am on my way to getting all fixed up like new again, I was due for my 33 year 100,000 mile tune up lol!!!

I have been broke for a long time and now I just got fed up with the constant pain and having to take time off from the gym alot due to all these problems. My tune up is half done now and I go for my shoulder consult in less than a week. I am not going to let all this keep me from fighting though. I love to fight and I did it with all these injuries and I sure am going to do it when I am all fixed up!

Yea my wife thought it was hilarious! We were in the shower one day, thats where I come up with my best stuff lol, and we were talking about my hernia and I just thought to call it herman to make it sound a little better. So everytime it came up we just referred to it as herman. We would be doing it and she would go to get on top and she would say she had to be careful not to hurt herman, yep right in the middle of sex he gets a shout out, lol. I will miss him, NOT LOL.
