It was a nightmare! The doc even used that exact word when he described it. I am glad it is done with too. I have a good feeling that the shoulder surgery will go well, 6 more days till it happens.

Remember 1 thing....an intern is a 1st year resident. So if you talk to a newbie doc...ask what year resident are they or they might get pissed and use a 10 gauge on you when they could have use a slin pin....lolz.

Well the time has come. I go for shoulder surgery tomorrow morning. To be honest I cant wait, my shoulder has been hurting real bad everyday at the slightest movement. I would have tried to bump it up to a closer date but my hernia surgery just got over with completely and I just got all healed up from it. So tomorrow it is. I will be in a sling for the first few weeks.

Ok here we go with a new update on my situation. The hernia deal is all over with and it turned out good this time. I had to go to the docs a few more times for it, once to get half the stitches out and then a week after to get the other half of them out and then for my last follow up and it is healed and doing good.
Now onto the shoulder surgery. I went in and had my right shoulder operated on this past thursday. What was thought to be an hour surgery turned into a 3 hour surgery. The mris showed 2 torn tendons but didnt quite show the severity of the tears. The doc said it was the worst shoulder he has ever seen in someone my age. The rotator cuff tendon was torn almost completely off and the slap lesion was way worse than he thought it was originally. I started off by going in for my surgery, which was super early in the morning. I get to the back and get all situated in the gown and in the bed and all. I get bombarded with all these different nurses and doctors with their interviews and everything. I talk to the knock out lady, I cant spell her title but she gives the medicine to keep me under during the operation, and she tells me they are knocking me out and I will be asleep for it and I get all this sedation and just the usual stuff they say. She also tells me what they normally do is a block of the nerves for the arm and how they have to do and ultrasound on my neck to find the right nerve and then pin my neck with some stuff to block the nerves and everything, so I agree to it. So in comes my doc and I talk to him for a minute and he initials my arm and leaves. The knockout lady does some drawing on my neck and the nurse starts my IV and starts with the meds in it. I get some pain pills to take before the stick my neck to take care of that pain. I got hooked up with so much pain killer stuff and sedations it was unreal, kinda scary too! Now I dont remember anything else from her giving me the pills and drawing on my neck too waking up after the surgery. I wake up and I was feeling ok because I was all numb. So I go home and I have this huge bandage on my shoulder, I swear it looked like half of some football pads! It was big and padded and I had to leave it on for 2 days. I took it off last night and it was like this rubber tape over this huge multi layer of gause pads the wer literally soaked in blood, it was real nasty. I notice all these little pieces of tape covering my stitches. I HAVE 8 INCISIONS!!!!! They are mostly in the front and side of my shoulder and one in the back. I was originally told I would have 3-4 little incision holes! It was that bad that he had to go in 8 times. It hurts like you wouldnt believe! I am in soooooo much pain its unreal. I hate taking pain meds but I have to with this, more than I did with my hernias. I am glad I got the operation though. The doc said that if I let it go any longer I wouldnt have been able to move my arm at all, he is surprised that I went this long with it like it was and still lifted weights!!!! He said he almost couldnt believe it! He told my mom that I am a big guy, I had to tell that cause it made me feel good, lol.
I go back in a week for a check up.
BTW: I hunt and pecked this all left handed!

I went to the docs for a follow up today. He showed me some pics of the surgery on my shoulder, they are pretty cool to see. He said my shoulder had alot wrong with it. He explained the pics as he was telling me about the tears and the fix. I am one week down out of three weeks in the slinng, so two more weeks to go. I have been straightening my arm a little cause my elbow gets all cramped up and he said not to do that cause of the slap lesion repair, it is the tendon for the bicep and straightening it pulls onn it. I didnt know at first but now I will keep it perfectly still. I told him I dont sleep in the sling cause it bothers my neck but I do prop my arm up with pillows when I sleep and he said it isnt unreasonable. He took all my stitches out, the nurse made a comment about how many holes there were. There was eight holes total. He gave me some exercises to start doing after I am out of my sling in two weeks. My next appointment is in 4 weeks. So far so good.

Well....as we all look forward to your recoup.....I'm planning on having my shoulder looked at. It's not getting any better and I feel I will be in your position within the next year. I know it's torn now, but my question is how bad?I'll be seeing the doc in 2 months and I'll let you all know how things go...

Hey everyone, here is an update on my shoulder.
I went to the docs today for my month post op follow up. He told me I am looking good and he wants me to push myself harder on the exercises to get my movement and range of motion back. I am a little over a week out of my sling and have been doing the exercises for a week now. I will tell you it is hard to do the simplest movements after this surgery! My shoulder has lost all muscle whatsoever and really just looks like skin draped over bone, I lost everything in it muscle and strengthwise. It was hard when I came out of the sling because I havent moved my arm in weeks and it was so stiff and locked up. It took some hard work already and alot of pain to get what movement I have now. The doc wants more so I am going to push my exercises to the point of almost crying! It has to be done and I really want to progress. My wife has told me that I have come a long way already, and I know I have but I need more. My wife and kids have been so much of a help to me. They have all gone way out of there way to do things for me that I cant do right now. My next appointment is in a month. I hope to be alot farther progressed with stretching and getting movement by then.
Thanks for the kind words everyone

That is great news DGAF. Don't worry about the muscle loss in the shoulder. You'll get that back in no time once that shoulder is healed.
