When a bodybuilder gets busted for steroids, 99% of the time it’s because another bodybuilder ratted him out. Operation Roid Runner, the latest in a long line of busts proving that people who name busts aren’t very clever. In this case, however, the bust comes complete with a who’s who of B-list bodybuilding celebrities and industry also-rans. Meet George Koufalis, the NPC bodybuilder who snitched out the nine other defendants who were arrested in Operation Roid Runner. In August of 2008 a search of his home by law enforcement agents found 89 bottles of injectable steroids, 900 pills, and some other bells and whistles (syringes, a gun, money, etc…). At that point, he began informing on Pro Lab, eventually bringing down the entire operation and nine other people.
George won the 2003& 2005 NPC MR. Lehigh Valley, the 2005 Bev Francis Atlantic States, and NPC Mr. Pennslyvania and the 2005 NPC Mountain Valley. He won three overalls within five weeks – which is no small accomplishment, but needs to be weighed against the fact that they were all within driving distance of each other, and hence featured many of the same competitors. Still, it’s noteworthy that he is not only a bodybuilder, but a moderately good one – and of course, he competes in the drug-laden NPC.
Authorities claim that he injected himself with somewhere between $8,000 to $20,000 worth of steroids per year to support his bodybuilding goal, which was to turn pro by 35. He is currently 34, and stopped using steroids about a years ago, when he began his career as a government informant. His goal to become a professional bodybuilder was out of the question almost immediately after he became the scourge of the NPC Pennsylvania. To support his own steroid use, he did what many bodybuilders to; they start selling them.
Once they were busted, 100% of the accused told police and a grand jury that they started selling them to support their own use and to pay for the expenses of competing as bodybuilders.
And I’m pretty sure that 100% of them will roll over on anyone they can think of…
