BP was know for taking risks in being on the cutting edge and it had paid off for some time. Unfortunately one risk can be the demise of any company. It appears that investigators found that BP was cutting corners in several areas to save costs. They are in some deep shit now!

I dont feel like this is anything new...They have been known for the last few years to have the majority of the major violations in the industry...

Just read some of the violation reports from the last few years

They are sure paying for their mistakes now! The spot light will be on them for many years to come after such a catastrophe.. I just hope it dont turn into an excuse to jack up oil prices yet again, almost at $3.00 a gallon now!! Let them pay for their mistakes without the consumer suffering...

What's bad is all this controversy about halted drilling and BS is costing many many families their jobs in South LA/TX/MS area... I have many friends who work offshore and are at a dead stop. I also hear of companies such as Murphy Oil and a couple others moving out of the gulf, some off the coast of South Africa....

As much as I hate to say it, Oil companies are a major player in US economics and as crooked as they may be, its a shame to lose them....

Yes and No...I hate to see anyone lose their jobs, but you have to look at the big picture here...How many people have lost their jobs due to the Oil spill..If you live on the gulf and close to this, then you will know what I am talking about. These towns depend on tourism and fishing to survive..That is almost shot right now for several towns..The oil companies have no contingency plans for disasters like this...Until they prove that they can fix a worst case scenario, I dont want to hear about offshore drilling..JMO

Yes but the real kicker is even many of these tourism towns and fishermen depend on oil industry related jobs during the slow times of the year even when things are going good. I understand how horrible this spill is and how hard it has been to contain being that its 5000ft below the surface, But heck, they were forced into deeper waters by democrats voting against new exploration drilling on the continental shelf making things that much more complicated.

Now a 6 month ban will cause appx. 400,000 total jobs to be lost in all the gulf coast states combined according to LA. Sen. Mary Landreau, a DEMOCRAT who is a big Obama supporter. The jobs that will be lost are not just rig workers, but all the support personnel needed to keep the platforms serviced, plus other on shore jobs in LA. MS., AL., GA., TX. and FL. such as the tourism industry workers and many other related jobs. Two deep water rigs are in the process being moved to Norway and will be lost to the gulf waters for years. Many other rigs will follow if this ban continues. If we continue to lose deep water rigs we will be just that much more dependent on oil being bought from countries who are not our friend. If this happens you will more than likely see $5.00 a gal. gas before to long. So between the oil spill and this ban, LA.'s economy will be further devastated by this ban. There are over 36,000 rigs in the gulf with many in deep water operating for years and years trouble free. BP messed up big time one time, that does not mean others will. We must continue to drill, but increase safety standards and inspections big time. Oil, like it or not, is the life blood of this nation and will be for decades to come..

Unfortunately, your last statement is very true..>We are so dependent on oil...We need to find some kind of alt energy sources that can START to replace oil..I am so sick to death of all the talk and talk and bullshit about alt energy sources...Just fucking spend some govt cheese and stop accepting all the lobbying oil companies money for your shitty campaigns..I am so sick of politicians..They are all the same..Worthless

The price of gasoline is determined on the New York Mercantile Exchange, not so much by oil companies.
It depends on the price of crude oil at any given time, and crude oil is refined into gasoline. In summer 2008, the price of crude reached near $150 per barrel, this in effect, sent gas prices skyrocketing! In addition, gas always goes higher due to the cyclical seasonal nature of anticipation of summer driving season.

Yes, agreed! I just hate to give those damn suits on wall street another excuse to pump up the prices! You know how they love to play with numbers during hard times, lol
