My mom too. She's tough and not one to normally complain but she said it was pretty miserable.

Wow brotha I feel for ya, as I saw a co-worker of mine do the same thing as you (tough it out at work) and he was MISERABLE!!! He was one of the hardest working guys I have ever seen, yet when he got the shingles even when he walked he looked like was in pain.
What causes shingles or is it just a virus like.........getting warts (HPV)?

how it was explained to me by my doctor was;
Its the chickenpox disease, and its pretty much trying to make a comeback, and it comesback in the form of shingles.
So yeah, the doctor said its a form of herpes, at that moment the room got real quite and my wife looked at me with this "you are going to die now" look, and the doctor realized this and said, "let me explain its not "herpes" "herpes", your husband did not get this by fooling around." hhahaha
I told the doctor thank you from saving my life and the life of my penis, cause im sure she was gonna pull a "Lorena Bobbitt" on me.
hahaha..... maybe pull isnt the right word haha

VIP I know more or less what you are dealing with.
I used to Treat some with Terepy, did not help them much.
Then I had a close friend here that suffered with this for a long time.
We both got CLOSE to this VERY interesting Doctor here he was from Ohio area. But just amazing with the INFO. Dr. Martin.
Anyway he was curing all kinds of stuff, shingles, cancer etc.
First of you have to check online for the RIGHT diet, some things that I recall must go is ALCOHOL & Tomatoes.
Look it up online. I am sure you can find it.
Also if in your State you can find it. The OZONE Treatment. You sit in a device naked zip up to your Neck & the machine blows O3 into your body, this permeates through you skin thereby curing many things. This great doc. left to work in Liberia.
Give it a shoot, just trying to be of help.

Hey bro you may want to check on some Neurontion or Lyrica. These are meds that works in a way that blocks nerve pain. They use a lot on sciatica(sp?), disk pain, neuropathy type pain. They are using it on shingles these days.

I agree with ruffneck....have been busy with work but used to be a mod in this forum. Neurontin is a great med for nerve pain which is exactly what this is. Varicella is the virus and it is a herpes virus. The herpes virus can ly dormant for years in our spinal cord and when the immune system is down it will attack. Always follows a nerve pattern and will be on one side of the body or the other. Valtrex is another great drug to combat this affliction. 100% of us have the ability to be afflicted with this virus.
